Influential biblical scholar Walter Brueggemann has died at the age of 92.
He passed away on 5th June at his home in Michigan, as reported by Christianity Today.
Over his long academic career, Brueggemann authored more than 100 books, many of which continue to shape theological education across denominations.
His landmark book The Prophetic Imagination (1978) has sold over a million copies.
Known for critiquing American consumerism and nationalism, Brueggemann was revered across denominational lines for his commitment to truth-telling and social justice.
Krista Tippett, host of the On Being podcast, described him as someone who “embodies this tradition’s fearless truth-telling together with fierce hope".
Originally from Nebraska, Brueggemann’s academic journey took him through Elmhurst, Eden, Union and finally Columbia Theological Seminary in Georgia, where he served as professor of Old Testament until his retirement in 2003.
He is survived by his wife Tia and sons James and John.
