Rt Rev Vivienne Faull has announced that she will step down as Bishop of Bristol in September 2025, marking the end of a distinguished 42-year ministry.
Reflecting on her tenure, she described her time in the role as a “beautiful coda”, bringing her career to a meaningful and fulfilling conclusion.
Bishop Faull, who took up the position in October 2018 after serving as Dean of York, has been a guiding figure for parishes across Bristol, Swindon, Gloucestershire, and Wiltshire. In a message to her parishioners, she shared her decision, stating: “The time has come for a rest", as reported by Christian Today.
Her connection to Bristol holds personal significance, as she noted that her mother—who was a strong advocate for the ordination of women—was born, baptised, and confirmed in the city.
Reflecting on her journey, she expressed gratitude for the communities she has served throughout her ministry, saying: “I have revelled in each of the places and communities to which God has called me and have been enriched by them all.”
Speaking about her time in Bristol, she added: “I will leave this generous, creative, brave and open diocese with deep gratitude for all that, in the power of the Holy Spirit, we have learnt and transformed together.”
A special farewell service will be held at Bristol Cathedral in August to honour her service. The Diocese of Bristol has confirmed that the process of appointing her successor is already underway.
