A Newcastle vicar has urged LNER to immediately close the men’s Victorian toilets at Central Station, after saying he was left “physically nauseated” by what he found.
Rev Mark Edwards said the facilities were “dark, dismal, and filthy” with cracked tiles, damp smells and visible dirt, calling the conditions “inconceivable that such conditions are still permitted in a major national railway station in 2025" as reported by Chronicle Live.
He has written to LNER and Network Rail saying the state of the loos gives an “appalling” first impression of the city.
The toilets were restored and reopened in 2021, and LNER say a further refurbishment is now planned for 2026, adding they “strive to keep all of our station facilities looking their best” and apologised for the current situation.
