Almost nine in 10 of the new US Congress members would identify themselves as Christians, according to a study.
Work by the Pew Research Centre showed 57 per cent were Protestant whilst 31 per cent were Catholic.
In comparison 20 per cent of the American public would identify themselves as Atheist.
The American Congress consists of both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
Traditionally they have both had high numbers of Christians.
The figures show two thirds of Republicans are Protestant, a quarter are Catholic and 5 per cent are Mormon.
