UK government 'deeply concerned' by Sudanese church demolitions

Responding to a question by the Bishop of Leeds Rt Rev Nick Baines, Lord Ahmad said he was aware of the reports and was deeply concerned.

Earlier this year, Christians in the African country asked for prayer as more buildings were destroyed.

The demolitions often come about through disputes over land ownership but many claim it's simply state persecution.

Those claims have been denied by the government there.

In his response to the situation, Lord Ahmad said: "The British Government continues to be deeply concerned by reports of the demolition of churches in Sudan.

"Through the UK-Sudan Strategic Dialogue, and our policy of phased engagement, we continue to raise human rights issues with the government of Sudan and make regular representations on freedom of religion or belief, including in relation to reported church demolitions, most recently during the Archbishop of Canterbury's visit to Sudan in July."
