UK church leaders unite for hour of prayer for Ukraine

by Sophie Drew

Church leaders from across London have gathered together in prayer amid the devastating war in Ukraine.

Ministers met at the Ukrainian Cathedral of the Holy Family in London to host an hour of devoted prayer.

The service began by chanting the Sixth Hour Office of the Ukrainian Church by the Cathedral Clergy led by the Rt Rev Kenneth Nowakowski, Bishop of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of the Holy Family of London.

From there, prayers were shared by leaders from across a number of denominations, including the Orthodox Church, the Church of England, the Catholic Church and the United Reformed Church.

Those that were not able to make the in-person service were urged to pray at home, or in their workplaces, during the hour.

Bishop of London, Rt Rev Sarah Mullally, said:  "I think we've all seen the horrific images on our televisions, and we've heard those heart-breaking stories from Ukraine.

"Therefore, as a Christian, there are two things we do.

"The first one is we turn to prayer to God.

"The second one is that we then ask ourselves, how can we be God's healing hands in the world?

"Praying together with other Christians for an hour is something that for me, in a sense, is one of the right responses to this terrible situation in Ukraine."

The event saw leaders from a number of different denominations gather together for one common cause - Bishop Sally believes this is crucial.

"As church leaders across London, we have been regularly meeting now for a considerable number of years.

"The reason we meet together is because it's important for us to pray together in fellowship, but also the fact that, the goal for us in the long term is unity as Christians, so we seek together to find the greatest possible unity that we can.

"Praying together at this really difficult time with the Ukrainian church is so important, because we show that we stand alongside them in what is a really difficult situation.

"So together, we stand with them in seeking God to intervene into the situation."
