TV show prompts record number of calls to Christians Against Poverty

In total, 3,708 enquiries were made in October - a 41 per cent increase on the same period last year - with bosses linking the spike with the airing of 'The Debt Saviours' on BBC 2 on 5th October.

Key relationship manager, Steve Haines told Premier: "We had a record number of calls on the Monday following the documentary - and on the Tuesday; they were the highest days that we've ever had."

CAP prepared for the surge in enquiries by appointing extra call handlers. A record number of appointments have also been made following the programme.

The show included research by the London School of Economics which found the debt charity, contributes £32 million to the UK economy.

Meanwhile, the organisation warned that 13 per cent of callers have to be referred to other debt agencies because there is not a church-run CAP Debt centre in their area.

Steve continued: "We're looking for churches in those areas where we have no coverage who might want to partner with us.

"We've got about 40 per cent of the UK where we still need more debt centre coverage."

Nearly 300 CAP Debt centres across the country help almost 19,000 people every year.

In London, CAP is keen for churches in locations including Greenwich, Hounslow, Stratford and Wembley to consider helping run a CAP Debt centre in their community.
