TV channel fined £25,000 for broadcasting televangelist who offered 'miracle water' to cure cancer

Regulator Ofcom said that Greener Technology Limited did not take steps to provide adequate protection for such viewers and there was a material risk that susceptible members of the audience may have been improperly exploited by the programme.

The ministry programme showed German born Popoff speaking about the impact of the so-called miracle water along with testimonies of individuals who'd spoken of its benefit with one implying it would cure cancer.

After finding the programme in breach of the Broadcasting Code, it's now imposed the financial penalty along with a requirement that the station does not repeat the programme and it broadcasts a statement of Ofcom's findings.

In the decision, which was published online, the regulator said: "Ofcom considered that the claims made in the programme had the potential to cause harm to members of the audience who may have been led to believe that the 'miracle spring water' alone was sufficient to cure their health conditions and that it was unnecessary to rely on, or continue receiving, conventional medical treatment.

Premier contacted Ben TV but the broadcaster chose not to comment.
