Tributes pour in for Christian digital expert Dr Bex Lewis who has died from cancer

Dr Bex Lewis, a much-loved Christian expert of all things digital and social media, has died from cancer.

As a frequent contributor to Premier and judge at the Premier Digital Awards, Dr Bex Lewis often gave insightful comments from a Christian perspective on the world of Instagram, children's relationship with technology and how the church should engage with the online world.

But she also gave others an insight into her journey with breast cancer, posting regular updates about how she was reacting to her latest treatment and being honest about what she was going through as well as informing people about the medicine available. She made hundreds of friends online through communities of cancer survivors and Christians with similar interests.

She died on Thursday, with the news being announced by close friend Andrew Graystone.

She posted a day before that she felt breathless and was coping with lots of pain. She had recently gone to St Ann's Hospice in Greater Manchester and found out that she also had Covid-19 so started self-isolating there.

Tributes have been pouring in for her online and #BeMoreBex is being used to share personal stories - some from those she knew in real life and other who heard talks at Christian festivals, such as Spring Harvest, or simply followed her story online.

Bryony Taylor, author of 'More TV Vicar', wrote online: "Heartbroken that my best online friend Bex Lewis sadly died today. Bex truly lived life to the full (epitomising Jesus' words in John 10:10) and had a massive positive impact on so many people including me.

"One of the last messages I sent to her was: 'The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms' Deut 33:27"

She was a senior lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University in Digital Marketing and author of Raising Children in a Digital Age: Enjoying the Best, Avoiding the Worst.

Premier's Deputy CEO Kevin Bennet, who worked with her on various digital projects for many years said: ""Bex had an infectious enthusiasm for all things digital. She was an accomplished scholar and one of life's natural explorers. Always thinking about those on the outside or left behind, it was a pleasure to have worked with her on many projects over the past decade. The church will be poorer for her passing but her legacy will live on."

Premier thanks God her for her life and her wisdom.

Here are some of the tributes:

In a world of fake news there’s never been a greater need for quality Christian journalism. Premier’s mission is to provide the Church with the most up to date and relevant news, told from a Christian perspective. But we can’t do it without you.

Unlike many websites we haven't put up a paywall — we want to keep our journalism free at the point of need and as open as we can. Premier’s news output takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. No one in the USA is sharing news like we are across radio, magazines and online so please help us to continue that today.

For a monthly gift of $11 or more we’d also be able to send you a free copy of the brand new Premier Bible, a wonderful Anglicised version of the NLT packed with exclusive bonus content, reading plan and resources to help you get the most out of scripture.

Your monthly support will make a world of difference. Thank you.
