He also said the Democratic Party underestimated how much American evangelical Christians oppose abortion.
He's been speaking after Donald Trump claimed victory in the US election.
He said he was keen to unite the country following a bitter fight for control of the White House.
Speaking on Premier's Inspirational Breakfast, Tony Campolo said: "There was a tendency for the elite, the academic elite, the people who kind of looked down their noses at others, to underestimate what was really going on in America: the anger and the upset and the disillusionment.
"I don't think people who underestimated Donald Trump understood who the evangelicals are and how important the abortion issue is to abortion issue is to American evangelicals.
"They become one-issue candidates. You could be wrong on every other issue but if you're in harmony with them on being pro-life, they're going to vote for you.
"This really represents for them a triumph of somebody who they now believe will appoint Supreme Court justices that will do away with the pro-choice positions that have marked America over the last several decades."
