Three church bells stolen by brazen thieves

by Antony Bushfield

The thieves would have had to carry the extremely heavy bells down the 50ft church tower at St Peter's Church, close to the homes of Princess Anne and the Prince of Wales.

Police are appealing for information after the vicar discovered the bells were gone when he pulled the ropes but no sound was made.

It means officers have a wide window when the theft may have happened, between midnight on Wednesday 8th June and 8am on Sunday 7th August.

Rev David Salter told the Express: "They are beautiful sounding bells and it is a beautiful church.

"It is just very sad that people seem to target the church.

"Although the bells are worth very little as scrap, it's very difficult to replace them, if indeed anybody still makes them.

Images have been released of where the bells would have been secured and a photo of a similar bell in the hope of tracing them.

Anyone with information should call police on 101 quoting incident 92 of 8th August.
