Thousands sign petition for dismissed York Minster bell ringers

The 30 volunteer ringers were told by church bosses their services were no longer required amid a restructure of the way the bell ringing is organised.

York Minster is hoping to recruit a paid head of the bell tower who will then be responsible for the team of bell ringers. Those who've been dismissed will be free to apply again.

The changes means the bells will remain silent until next year including no festive bells this Christmas and New Year – breaking a tradition which dates back to the 14th Century.

Alice Etherington, one of the bell ringers, is hoping to get 15,000 signatures to take to leaders at York Minster so those traditions, as well as the Remembrance Day bell tradition isn't broken.
