Teen diver gives glory to God as she's named European Champion weeks after Commonwealth Games golds

by Sophie Drew

Just weeks after she stormed the boards at the Commonwealth Games, 17-year-old Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix has been named European Champion.

Daughter of famous restauranteur Fred Sirieix, the teenager isn't afraid to share her love of God with her large social media following.

During the Commonwealth Games, she dedicated a Bible verse to each phase of the competition.

From Birmingham, she flew straight to Rome to compete in the European Championships. However, in amongst the craziness of recent weeks, the teen still took time to praise God after cinching the gold.

Taking to Instagram, the diver said: "God showed His might and strength and moved a huge mountain into the ocean. Emotions and fatigue were running high and in that moment I reflected on how far I had come."

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, the England athlete described how she powered through despite a rocky start to the year, where she came close to hanging up her swimming costume and walking away from the water.

She said: "I had quite a tough beginning of the year," she told BBC Radio 5 live.

"I couldn't do any of my dives. I was terrified of diving and I was really close to quitting because I was petrified of everything.

"But my team and my family just helped me get through it. I don't think I would be here if it wasn't for them."

Spendolini-Sirieix still has one competition to go - the 10m synchronised event alongside fellow GB star Lois Toulson.
