Star Wars fans urged to keep Sabbath holy

by Eno Adeogun

Placards urging cinema goers to keep the day holy were held as the first ever film was shown in a public cinema on the island off the west of Scotland.

Rev David Fraser from the Free Church of Scotland (Continuing) was joined by a woman to protest the showing of "The Last Jedi" at the An Lanntair arts venue in Stornoway.

He told Premier why he decided to take a stand.

Speaking during Premier's News Hour, he said: "There's constant pressure because we're going against the modern trend of excluding God and excluding Christianity and excluding Jesus more and more from life and conversations and values..."

All 183 tickets were sold out for the latest instalment of the space opera franchise.

Rev Fraser said he would continue protesting if other businesses on the island also decided to open on Sundays.

Premier contacted An Lanntair for a response.

A spokesperson said: " An Lanntair has a strong commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, and to opening up access for all to the arts.

"Over recent months we have carried out some consultation, which has highlighted some interest from our audiences and members in Sunday opening.

"As a result, our board of directors agreed to run a trial to further this research and explore and inform demand.

"It should be noted that this continues to be an audience research exercise at this stage, the Sunday trial events will help inform our decision making on opening hours for the future. "
