Six arrested at UKIP’s ‘Walk with Jesus’ Liverpool rally

by Anna Rees Green

Six people have been arrested at a Christian-themed protest organised by UKIP.

The ‘Walk with Jesus’ was condemned by local Christian leaders, and ultimately found itself outflanked by counter-demonstrators on Saturday.

The event was billed as a “procession in Liverpool worshipping Jesus Christ”.

UKIP stated on social media: “The dedication is to the passion of the Lord!”

The walk began on the steps of Liverpool’s Metropolitan Cathedral, as a police helicopter circled overhead.

UKIP leader Nick Tenconi was joined by approximately 50 supporters, according to the Liverpool Echo.

However, those supporting the march appeared to be an underwhelming crowd, in comparison to hundreds who joined a rival gathering, organised by Stand Up to Racism Merseyside. They carried signs saying: "UKIP would deport Jesus".

Their stance was reflected by a coalition of local Christian leaders, who issued a statement ahead of the march describing Liverpool as a city with a "proud history of resilience, solidarity and loving its neighbour".

The Catholic Archbishop of Liverpool, Most Rev John Sherrington, and the Anglican Interim Bishop of Liverpool, Rt Rev Ruth Worsley, said they stand with "the many voices of concern" surrounding the event.

"We will continue to stand firm against hatred, prejudice, racism and bigotry in all their forms, confident that these forces will not define who we are as a society," they added.
