Singapore pastor Kong Hee gets eight years for country's worst charity fraud ever

Kong Hee, 51, was sentenced along with five others from the City Harvest Church megachurch, who each received between 21 months and six years in prison.

They were found guilty of misappropriating £23m of funds from the church. Around half the money went towards trying to accelerate Kong Hee's wife's pop music career, with the other half attempting to hide their fraudulent activity.

The church said it was using her music to reach out to non-Christians.

Kong Hee's wife Sun Ho, 43, has never been charged with fraud. She is now a pastor of City Harvest Church in her husband's absence, with the church rebranding itself "CHC 2.0".

See Kee Oon, presiding over the trial, said: "They have been found guilty of serious offences following misuse of trust. misuse of donor's money, given the large sums taken for a specific purpose."

Mr Hee did not comment after the case, however it has been confirmed that he and the five other defendants are considering appealing.

A statement on the CHC 2.0 website said: "We want to thank each and every one of you, our church members, for demonstrating such strength and unity throughout all these years, and particularly in these last few extremely difficult months. We ask you to remember and hold close to your heart the call of God upon City Harvest Church.

"We have learned lately what it means to have faith, trust and rest in God-let us put what we have learned to practice. Let's band together to fulfill the heavenly calling for us through CHC 2.0.

"Let us continue to pray for the six and their families as they prepare for this next step in the legal process.

"May God grant them grace and the peace that surpasses understanding."
