Sheffield church to host Christmas carol service to support next generation

by Lydia Davies

One of Sheffield’s historic landmarks, the New Testament Church of God on Nursery Street, is gearing up for a special Christmas carol service to support both its restoration efforts and a medical charity.

The church, which dates back to 1848, is a Grade II listed building in need of ongoing repairs. Following a recent roof replacement, further restoration work is scheduled for next year, including vital re-pointing to ensure the building remains safe, watertight, and able to continue serving the community.

In an interview with The Star, Rev Des Reid, who has been involved with the church since the early 1970s, shared his vision for the upcoming service, which will take place on Sunday, 22nd December at 6 p.m.

The carol concert will raise funds for the church’s restoration, as well as for the Anthony Nolan Trust, a charity dedicated to supporting people with blood cancers and matching them with bone marrow donors. The charity connection is particularly poignant, as the service is being held in memory of a church member who passed away last year.

“The building is very old, and as you can imagine, maintaining it is an ongoing challenge,” Rev Reid said.

“We’re committed to keeping the church in good condition, not only for the people who use it now but for future generations as well.

The upcoming carol service is a wonderful way for the community to come together to support this work and the Anthony Nolan Trust, which is such an important cause.”

The church has seen significant progress in its restoration over the years, including the return of metal fencing originally removed during World War II.

These efforts are part of a long-term commitment to preserving the building’s historic character while ensuring it meets the needs of the local community. With large gatherings, including weddings, baby dedications, and funerals, the church serves as a focal point for local life.

The carol service will not only provide an opportunity for worship and celebration, but also for the congregation to raise funds that will help maintain and restore the building, allowing it to continue serving the people of Sheffield for many years to come.

Everyone is invited to attend the service, and Rev Reid is hopeful that the event will bring both joy and much-needed support.

As the church looks ahead to the new year, it remains dedicated to maintaining its place at the heart of the community, with both physical repairs and acts of charity ensuring its legacy for the future.
