This year's Sermon of the Year winner has been announced live on Premier Christian Radio with Baptist minister William Wade taking the crown.

49-year-old Wade was one of four finalists in the fifth Sermon of the Year competition organised by Preach magazine.

Wade is a minister at Life Church in Cuffley, Hertfordshire. He was born in Belfast and describes himself as a rebellious teenager who found God.

He served as a soldier in the British Army, then after getting married, became a missionary to British Forces with SASRA.

Speaking to Premier about his decision to take part in the competition, he said: "I entered Sermon of the Year 2020 because I was immediately struck by the title 'Made by God' and wondered what would come out of a sermon if I were to attempt that title."

And addressing being crowned winner, he said: "An absolute surprise! It's wonderful news, thank you to the panellists. I really enjoyed writing the sermon, and hoped that whoever read it would at least be blessed by it.

"I think scripture is such a comfort to all of us and it's when you're in the trenches of life, or walking through the valleys of life that you realise that scripture isn't just that, you know, it's not a comfort blanket. It really is true and God's promises really are true."
