A church in Penlee has won the Good News Church competition after working tirelessly to support their community throughout the pandemic.

From doorstep sing-a-longs with their young people to delivering food for those isolating, the Diocese of Truro has gone above and beyond to lift spirits during a very difficult two years.

A group of volunteers posted crafts to the local children, and others got stuck in writing poetry.

Rev Sian Yates, one of the leaders of the project, said: "We're so excited, and really surprised because the projects that people have been doing were so, so good.

"So it was a real surprise."

When asked how other churches can follow suit, she said: "We're asking people really to see the face of Christ in everybody.

"If you see the face of Christ in everybody, I think then you're inspired to do some really exciting projects, with some fun and joy and happiness, but providing some very basic things.

The event, hosted by Ecclesiastical Insurance, took place in Westminster's Church House on Tuesday, May 11.

Awardees from every corner of the UK travelled to London to mark the event - the first since the pandemic - and the fantastic work of clergy and volunteers.

Four other churches were awarded in the regional round; St John the Baptist in Leicester, Holy Trinity in Bangor, St Luke the Evangelist near Fife and St Gabriel's Church in Sheffield.
