The Diocese of Aberdeen & Orkney is celebrating an historic moment with the appointment of Rev Canon Dr Jennifer Holden as its first female Dean.

With Rt Rev Anne Dyer serving as the Scottish Episcopal Church's Bishop of Aberdeen and Orkney, it has become the first Scottish diocese to have a female bishop and dean at the same time.

Rev Jennifer began worshipping in the diocese as a layperson, going on to vocational discernment to ordination. After training with the Scottish Episcopal Institute at New College, Edinburgh, she returned to Aberdeen to serve her curacy at St John's Episcopal Church before transitioning into encouraging discipleship as an Advisor for Christian Life – a role she will continue in alongside her position as Dean.

Prior to her ordination, Jennifer worked in roles that have focused on community engagement, education, and communication. Additionally, she was a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Aberdeen, where she explored the impact of digital technology on rural communities.

Rev Jennifer said: "This Diocese has been my spiritual home for nearly 15 years. It is an incredible honour to accept this appointment. The people that have surrounded and supported me on this journey and the connections I've made have nurtured me and encouraged my vocation and continue to do so.

“The Diocese of Aberdeen & Orkney is a diverse community, which is something that we are incredibly proud of. I am looking forward to supporting our congregations and helping to guide members of the Church, near and far, whatever their present challenges.”

Senior officials at the Diocese of Aberdeen & Orkney said: “In Jenny, we have a person with a deep love and commitment to the Diocese and our inclusive community.”

The Diocese of Aberdeen and Orkney is part of the Scottish Episcopal Church (SEC) and the Anglican Communion.
