Christian golfer Scottie Scheffler: Open win 'doesn’t fulfill the deepest desires of my heart’

by Anna Rees Green

World number one golfer Scottie Scheffler has said that winning the Open does not “fulfil the deepest desires of my heart”.

The Christian golfer is public about family and faith being his “not-so-secret weapon” to sporting success.

Scheffler dominated at Royal Portrush, winning by four shots and finishing at 17 under par.

He maintained a humble approach to beating Rory McIlroy in his home country: “I know I wasn't the fan favourite, so I appreciate you guys coming out to support," he said.

Trophy in hand, he told reporters: “Am I grateful for it? Do I enjoy it? Oh my gosh, yeah, this is a cool feeling. I can't wait to get home and celebrate this Championship with the people that have helped me along.”

“But at the end of the day, it doesn't fulfil the deepest desires of my heart… it’s tough to describe when you haven’t lived it.”

In what appeared to be a reference to his faith, Scheffler continued: “Just because you win a golf tournament or accomplish something, it doesn't make you happy. Maybe for a few moments, maybe for a few days - but at the end of the day, you know, there's more to life than playing golf.”

After winning the Masters in 2022, the New Jersey-born sportsman said it all comes down to Jesus: “The reason why I play golf is I’m trying to glorify God and all that he’s done in my life. So for me, my identity isn’t a golf score.”
