Sainsbury’s criticised for ad campaign encouraging people to get drunk on Good Friday

Christians have taken to social media to criticise supermarket giant Sainsbury’s for its promotion on alcohol, encouraging people to “Make Good Friday Great” by getting drunk.

Theology tutor, Chris Lane posted a Tweet with an image of the stand advertising Gin and vodka for £14 per large bottle.

He said: “Seen today in @sainsburys - ‘Make Good Friday Great’. WHAT THE HECK?? With Gordon’s gin too??? Cos that’s what Good Friday is for? Not impressed at all @sainsburys.”

The tweet got an instant reaction by other social media users.

Dr Phil Isherwood, a poet at Bolton Hospice, tweeted: “Oh dear.

“Jesus died for our sins not our gins - but Jesus is the absolute premium tonic you need in a new life! You can discover that on Easter Sunday!”

Sue Cooke, the vicar of the St Thomas with St Stephen Anglican church in London, said: “I'm a Vicar and I love gin, but am saddened to see @sainsburys @GordonsGinUK thinking this is a good marketing strategy.

“One of the holiest days in the Christian calendar, can't imagine any other religion having one of their festivals used in this way.”

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson told Premier: “Customer feedback is important to us and the display was removed from our stores earlier this week.”
