Rolling Stones defied Pope Francis to rock Cuba, says "insider"

by Aaron James

The famous band led by Sir Mick Jagger rocked out with tens of thousands of people in the capital Havana - a historic event given that foreign rock music had previously been banned under the Communist government for several decades.

It's the second momentous event to happen in Cuba in a week after the visit of US President Barack Obama - the first president to do so for 88 years.

The Daily Mirror has claimed Pope Francis wanted them to postpone the concert - even if it was only until one minute past midnight on Saturday - because it fell on the day Jesus died.

A tour insider told the paper: "The band's team were flabbergasted when the Vatican got in touch by letter - couldn't believe their eyes.

"Much as they didn't want to upset the Pope, they had a contract to play and were going to honour it.

"They have made a promise to the Cuban people and won't let them down."
