Five campaigners from the group Christian Climate Action were detained by police on Monday morning on Whitehall accused of criminal damage.
The protest was taking place on the first day of the Climate Summit in Paris where 150 countries are working towards an historic agreement to deal with global warming.
It is alleged a group of people wrote slogans in black paint on the walls of the Department for Energy and Climate Change.
Those arrested were Ruth Jarman from Hampshire, 52, Phil Kingston from Bristol, 79, Helen Whitall from Exeter, 32, Westley Ingram from Surrey, 39, and Fr Martin Newell from Birmingham, 48.
