Pressure on elderly bigger than ever, says charity

by Hannah Tooley

The Outlook Trust is speaking after a study by Imperial College London found by 2030, life expectancy in England and Wales is expected to reach almost 86 for men and almost 88 for women.

The gap between the two expectancies has closed from around 6 years in 1981 to just under 2 years by 2030.

Researchers predict by 2030 men will be living 2.4 years longer than official estimates from the Office of National Statistics suggest, with women gaining one extra year. The study also showed that people in more wealthy areas had a higher life expectancy than those in poorer areas.

It comes as new figures show the number of people in their late eighties or above caring for loved ones has tripled in the last 15 years.

Age UK and Carers UK says between 2001 and 2011, the amount of elderly carers went up by 125 per cent.

They say the health of older carers is at risk, and more funding should be in place for their loved ones to be looked after.

Robin Rolls is from The Outlook Trust. He told Premier's News Hour: "The pressures on older people are greater now, by the time people get to 60 or 70 and are maybe able to retire, there's quite a large number of them [that] will then be actually looking after grandchildren - and in their dreams 30 years ago maybe they thought they would be travelling around the world on their pension.

"Well a pension doesn't add to much and actually they have to look after their grandchildren because their children can't afford to work and put their children into day care.

"So there are more and more pressures on elderly people - and we do have to be aware of those and respond to those as best we can."
