President of the Methodist Conference takes to the Thames to promote refugee compassion

by Sophie Drew

The President of the Methodist Conference left the pulpit behind and took to the River Thames, urging MPs to offer compassion to refugees attempting to enter the UK.

The Rev Sonia Hicks stood alongside people who'd arrived in the UK as asylum seekers - on the day MPs debated the governments Nationality and Borders Bill.

The Bill has been heavily criticised by a number of faith leaders; many are concerned that it will make it more difficult for genuine asylum seekers, particularly those fleeing domestic abuse, to enter the country.

Rev Hicks has penned her name - alongside sixteen other church leaders from the Anglican, Catholic and Free Churches - to a letter sent to every single MP ahead of the debate, calling for more compassion for refugees.

She said: "I think the policy of the Methodist Church is that we promote safe humanitarian corridors so that people can find safe routes to leave places of war and oppression.

"That's what we are calling for."

"As a country, it would be nice if we would actually agree to a set figure of refugees to be allowed in and give them humanitarian corridors.

"So no more trying to battle the English Channel, but actually safe areas they can come through on."
