Port chaplain 'worried and distressed' by migrant problem

Security's been stepped up on both sides of the Channel after chaotic scenes following a blockade yesterday.

While strikes took place, hundreds of migrants tried to board queuing lorries.

Today services are back to normal, however it's claimed many people are still trying to get into the lorries as they queue at the French port.

David Slater works with the chaplaincy team at Dover port and is encouraging Christians to pray for the situation. Speaking to Premier, he said: "It's very worrying and distressing. Last week we had the 15th anniversary of the 58 Chinese who were found dead in the back of a lorry.

"This is not a new problem. It's being going on, unfortunately for a long time. It's not getting any better.

"Pray for the individuals who've been told they need to come to this country, got themselves in debt to get this country.

"Pray that governments will find a way of dealing [with the situation]."

David Cameron's labelled the situation "totally unacceptable", but said it's important to work with the French and there was "no point either side trying to point the finger of blame".

Speaking during Prime Minister's Questions, he said "a lot of that needs to happen in Italy where they land".
