The Vatican's showcase Bambino Gesu (Baby Jesus) Pediatric Hospital has been the subject of close scrutiny after doctors and nurses report safety being ingnored and sick children suffering.
The Vatican's response has been quick with a secret three-month authorized investigation in early 2014.
The report, which included documentation and testimony from dozens of current and former staff members, confirmed that the mission of 'the pope's hospital' had been lost and was more interested in making profit than caring for children
The report however was never made public. Some changes were put in place while others were ignored.
The Vatican then commissioned a second inquiry a year later (2015) concluding nothing was out of place. The report went on to suggest that the hospital did change it's focus under a previous administration. Between 2008 to 2015, services were expanded and it was suggested that a money-losing Vatican enterprise turned a profit with children often paying the price.
During his Christmas audience, Pope Francis did publicly acknowledged the issues at the hospital and his address was frequently interrupted by grateful staff applauding. He told gathered crowds that at his hospital, doctors and nurses must focus on children and not fall prey to corruption.
