Pope meets Harlem Globetrotters

by Hannah Tooley

The Globetrotters tried to teach Pope Francis some basketball moves, including how to spin a ball on his finger, and he was presented with a framed Globetrotters shirt with 'Pope Francis' and the number 90 on the back.

The number 90 on the shirt is thought to refer to the Pope's 90% approval rating with US Catholics.

Global News reported that the Holy Father took time out from his general weekly audience to practice his skills with the team.

The Harlem Globetrotters were founded in 1926 and were the one of the first teams to feature African-American players during the time of segregation in the United States.

During their visit they the team did not make Pope Francis an honorary member, as they did during their last visit when Pope John Paul II was invited to join the Globetrotters.
