Pope Francis has canonised the first married couple declaring the parents of the beloved St Therese of Lisieux saints in their own right.
The Holy Father's aim is to provide a role model family that took the time and care to provide their children with an education in faith.
The canonisation of Louis and Zelie Martin comes at the start of the final week of his bishops' meeting on families, the Family Synod.

Francis is particularly devoted to the 19th century French Carmelite nun, St Therese, who died at the age of 24 in 1897 and was later declared doctor of the church.
Her parents bore nine children, only five of whom survived. All five became nuns, including the youngest, Therese, at 15.
