Peterborough vicar calls for Fiona Onasanya to go

by Cara Bentley

Fiona Onasanya, the now independent MP for Peterborough, was found guilty of perverting the course of justice after lying about driving a speeding car.

She was expelled from the Labour party and is now facing a six week petition which, if 10% of her constituents physically sign, will trigger a by-election.

Rev Canon Ian Black, vicar of St John's Parish Church in central Peterborough and Canon of Peterborough Cathedral, told The Times: "It's time for her to go"

He explained that he thought this because the law had looked at both sides: "She has had more than her day in court and I read the judge's summing up and he was very clear that she had put her case across and the jury had decided against her. I found the video bizarre."

Rev Ian was referring to a video Onasanya posted on her social media pages in which she says she has always maintained her innocence, asks her constituents why she would risk her career for points on her licence and says she has never had the chance to put across her side of the story.

She has previously linked her fight with the law with that of Jesus and other Biblical characters, saying: "I am in good biblical company along with Joseph, Moses, Daniel and his three Hebrew friends who were each found guilty by the courts of their day."

Rev Ian said: "She is a person of faith and she had always struck me as being someone of integrity and of deep interest in this constituency, so the whole thing is just strange.

"I think she is someone going through a personal turmoil and for that she does have my profound sympathy and prayers, but I think her days as our MP should come to an end."

She could stand in a by-election but would face a tough battle as she only won by 607 seats in 2017 and her constituency voted Leave.

"Feelings are high and angry over Brexit and I don't think it's going to be a pleasant campaign if it happens."
