Pentecostals gather for first ever national celebration

by Hannah Tooley

Twenty organisations, representing around 250,000 Pentecostal and Charismatic believers, is hosting National Pentecostal Symposium and Celebration on Saturday.

The event aims to make people think and will feature preaching, question sessions on history, diversity and economics as well as music.

Bishop Dr Joe Aldred helped organised the event and told Premier he hopes the it will foster unity in the wider Church.

He said: "Pentecostals are thought of sometimes by themselves to be a cut above the rest, and other people then look at Pentecostals and look down at it - so I'm really hoping that they'll be a sense of a shared Christianity, a shared faith, if not a shared humanity as well."

Pentecostalism is the fastest growing Christian expression across the world and there are currently 280 million faithful.

There are 85 million Anglicans.

Bishop Dr Joe Aldred told Premier he hopes the event will connect people: "Lots of us, we work in the same vineyard for the Lord, but we don't actually meet.

"This will be a time for people to meet and hopefully to bond, I really do hope they'll be some long friendships that will be made."

There will be awards for four individuals for outstanding contributions to Pentecostalism in Britain as well as music from London Community Gospel Choir and Noel Robinson.
