Pastor abuse scandal induces closure of popular megachurch

by Lydia Davies

Lexington City Church in Kentucky, has made the decision to close its doors in light of a sex scandal involving a key member of its leadership.

Zachary King, who served as the executive pastor at LexCity Church, was arrested on charges related to the rape and sexual abuse of a minor. He faces multiple charges, including first and third-degree rape and sodomy, first-degree sexual abuse, and illegal use of electronics for initiating sexual acts with a minor.

Currently, King is being held on $250,000 (£191,750) bail.

In response to these events, LexCity Church announced on its website that it will be shutting down permanently. The statement highlighted financial struggles predating the scandal and the impact of the ongoing investigation into King’s actions as reasons for the closure.

"Following careful consideration and many heartfelt discussions, our leadership team has unanimously decided to conclude our ministry," the church stated. "The financial challenges we faced in recent years, coupled with the effects of this investigation, have made it impossible for us to continue our mission."

This incident marks the second time a pastor from LexCity Church, previously known as Quest Community Church, has resigned due to sexual misconduct. Pete Hise resigned in 2014 after acknowledging an inappropriate relationship with a church staff member.

The church expressed its sorrow over the situation, saying in a statement: “Our hearts go out to all those affected by this tragedy. We promise full cooperation with law enforcement as they proceed with their investigation. Nonetheless, we believe ceasing our operations is the most responsible course of action for our community and faith.”

Before his tenure at Lexington City Church, King was involved in ministry roles at Metropolitan Baptist Church in Houston and served as a team leader at Lifechuch.tv.
