Five teenagers are facing multiple felony charges in connection with the death of an Oregon minister who was shot while protecting his four-year-old grandson during a home invasion, authorities said.

Kevin Cooper, 56, was a minister at People of Purpose Family Worship Center in Portland, Oregon, according to People.

Police said Cooper died on Dec. 12, 2025, more than a month after he was shot multiple times during a break-in at his home on Nov. 1, 2025. His brother told KOIN 6 that the suspects allegedly knocked on the door and pretended to be police officers before forcing entry.

Portland Police said the five suspects entered the home and shot Cooper in front of family members.

“Since the shooting on November 1, 2025, Detectives with the Enhanced Community Safety Team (ECST) have been pursuing leads, gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and conducting other investigative work to identify who was responsible for the crime,” the police department said in a statement.

The suspects are aged between 17 and 19. Charges include First Degree Murder, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Assault, Burglary, Recklessly Endangering Another Person and Menacing, among other offences.

"The death of Kevin Cooper is a tragedy in every way," said Chief Bob Day. "While nothing can bring him back, I sincerely hope that these arrests are a step in healing for his family.”

Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney Eric Palmer, who is prosecuting the case, said the city could not tolerate rising violence among youth and young adults.

“Kevin Cooper should still be with his grandchildren, his wife, and his church,” said Palmer. “We look forward to delivering justice for Mr. Cooper's family, holding these men accountable, and doing our part to prevent further acts of violence."
