One million more people will go McDonalds than CofE churches at Christmas

by Antony Bushfield

Figures suggest 3.5 million Brits will go to the burger shop on Christmas Eve compared to just 2.4 million people who will go to a Church of England Christmas service.

Official figures from the Church show that in 2013 approximately 2.4 million people participated in a service on Christmas Day or Christmas Eve.

McDonalds said it served, on average, 3.5 million customers per day.

The figures have prompted renewed calls for more work to encourage people to go to a Christmas church service.

Michael Harvey from the Back to Church Sunday Campaign told Premier: "The reason I'm not surprised is because my findings is that people would like an invitation to church but we're not that good at inviting people whereas McDonald's are really good at inviting people.

"Nowadays it really does take a brave person to walk into a church building on their own. I've often heard people saying I've got to get my life in order before going to church and people feel very hypocritical.

"One of the things that we have to work on as church is becoming better inviting, becoming an invitational people, not just welcoming, but actually welcoming and inviting."

He added that Christians didn't have to take their friends to a physical building in order for them to attend church: "Wherever two or three are gathered in God's name - God is there, and that could be in a coffee shop, that could be at a place of work, it could be absolutely anywhere."

In November it was found the Church of England made more money a year than McDonald's.
