A nun who was killed after being struck by a car has been remembered by her fellow sisters as a woman of “deep faith” who had “great kindness for everyone she met”.
Sister Genevieve, aged 87, died after the fatal collision in Newport, Wales, at the end of February.
Previously known as Anne Clanchy, she had been a teacher and sister of St. Joseph of Annecy for 67 years.
In a tribute, issued through Gwent Police, the sisters said: “She taught in various schools in the English Province, spending many years as head of St. Winifred’s School, Lee, in South London.
“In retirement, Sister Genevieve returned to her home area of Chatham in Kent and later moved to Devizes in Wiltshire. There she enjoyed being part of so many parish activities, making many friends.
“In recent years she had been living in Newport and continued to reach out to others through the local groups that she joined.
“Sister Genevieve’s sudden death is a shock to the sisters and all those who knew her. She will be remembered for her great kindness to everyone that she met, her interest in them and their lives, her love of life and her quiet, deep faith.”
Responding to comments of prayers and condolences on Facebook, the sisters said they had been “deeply touched”. They thanked members of the public and medical staff who responded to the incident, as well as hospital chaplain Father Peter Davies.
Officers were called to the collision on Stow Park Avenue, at 3:55pm on 24 February. The pedestrian, who has now officially been named as Sister Genevieve, was taken to hospital but later pronounced dead.
