Nigel Farage: 'The Church has let the country down worse than politicians'

by Tola Mbakwe

Nigel Farage has hit out at the Church of England and accused it of poor leadership.

In a YouTube video, Farage first slams Prime Minister Boris Johnson for self-isolating after being in contact with an MP who later tested positive for Covid-19.

He insinuated the timing of his isolation was bad with Brexit talks coming to a conclusion.

"He's in hiding. But don't worry, if the politicians aren't giving leadership, there's always the Church," Farage said sarcastically.

He then condemned the Church and the Archbishop of Canterbury for inadequate spiritual leadership at a time when Prime Minister Boris
Johnson is also "far from giving leadership at a vital time in terms of the well-being of our nation"

"All the Church want to do is talk about progressive lefty politics," he complained. "They have provided no spiritual leadership for the nation whatsoever."

Farage then accused Most Rev Justin Welby of being a "lefty".

"And now we hear just as Boris is hiding… the Archbishop is taking a sabbatical," he ranted.

"I thought that was after you've done something of note. What on earth is he taking a sabbatical for? I tell you what Dr Welby, make it a permanent sabbatical because the Church has let the country down even worse than the politicians."

Lambeth Palace announced last week Archbishop Justin was taking a three-month sabbatical next year for "spiritual renewal" and will spend time studying, reflecting and praying.

They said it is "normal practice" for archbishops to take time off, as his predecessors also did the same thing.

Premier has contacted Lambeth Palace and the Church of England for a response to Farage's comments.
