New James Bond film to be set near Vatican

by Desmond Busteed

The as-yet unnamed 24th instalment of the James Bond franchise, with actor Daniel Craig now in his forth outing as 007 is due to begin shooting at Pinewood studios outside of London in the coming weeks.

However, several night-time high-speed car chases are planned through Rome's historical centre's narrow winding streets, as well as on main thoroughfare Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, with one car ending up in the Tibur River.

One scene is also expected to result in an iconic Fiat 500 getting crushed in Borgo Vittorio, near the Vatican, with Bond also rumoured to parachute from a helicopter onto Ponte Sisto, a 15th-century pedestrian bridge that connects Trastevere to the centre.

Scenes shot outside of Rome, in Campania, in the Royal Palace of Caserta, known as the Versailles of Italy are also expected, according to the reports.

It will be Daniel Craig's fourth turn as James Bond after taking the title role in Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace and Skyfall.

British director Sam Mendes is returning to direct for a second time following the success of 2012's Skyfall.

The new James Bond project is expected to hit theatres in late 2015.
