New home for Newport church devastated by fire

The congregation will gather at nearby Havelock Street Presbyterian Church for "the foreseeable future."

It'll meet at a new time of 3pm.

Plans to develop the now burnt down building have been withdrawn as the council confirmed part of the church will need to be demolished to make the building safe.

Speaking on Premier's News Hour earlier this week, Bethel's pastor Andrew Cleverley said as a church, they're remaining hopeful for the future.

"That verse from Romans says that all things work together for good for those that trust the Lord," he said. "And when we say we 'all' we mean the good and the bad and so we believe that even what the enemy meant for evil God can turn it to our good and we celebrated and worshipped yesterday with all the community."

In a Facebook post this week, the church revealed the whole building was hit except for the prayer room.
