Dr Fuad Nahdi of the group Radical Middle Way has been taking part in a panel discussion at the General Synod on the issue of religious freedom around the world.
He was joined by Rt Revd Nick Baines, Bishop of Leeds, Bishop Angaelos, the General Bishop of the Coptic Orthodox Church in Great Britain and the Revd Dr Rachel Carnegie, the Co-Director of the Anglican Alliance.
One of the points they addressed was whether the UK should offer asylum to those currently suffering at the hands of Islamic State militants in Iraq.
Dr Nahdi raised concerns that offering asylum would just fuel the exodus of Christians.
Speaking to Premier after the discussion he said it shouldn't have got to the point where this is even being considered: "There is no justification today for Christians to be persecuted but there's no justification for Muslims who hold a different view to be persecuted like Sunni against Shia.
"This is a disease that we all have to deal with."
Bishop Angaelos took a less emphatic position on the issue, speaking to Premier, he said: "I don't think we should be prescriptive in saying who should or shouldn't be offered asylum but listen to people there.
"If they feel they have a sustainable future and they need us to help them while they're there we should do that.
"If they feel that their presence is no longer viable and they feel threatened then we should help them to feel more secure elsewhere."
One of the other issues that came out of the panel discussion was the need for Christians to offer support to Muslims who criticise the actions of extremists.
