More than 40 UK churches receive funding boost

41 churches will receive the funding to help with urgent repair work to towers, gutters and stonework.

One chapel that will receive a £3,000 share of the grant is St Peter upon Cornhill, one of Sir Christopher Wren's City of London churches and was rebuilt after the Great Fire of London. It was one of the few City churches to escape damage during the Blitz.

Huw Edwards, the BBC journalist and Vice-President of the National Churches Trust said: "I'm delighted that the future of 41 churches and chapels is being secured with the help of National Churches Trust grants to help fund urgent repairs, install much needed community facilities and to carry out essential maintenance."

Earlier this month, the Trust set up the ExploreChurches website to make it easier for the public to discover beautiful churches across the country.

As part of the launch, travel writer Bill Bryson revealed his list of favourite churches which included St Martin's in the Field in London, Durham Cathedral and Hexam Abbey.
