Seventy-six men and seventy-six women received specially minted coins from His Majesty as a symbol of appreciation for their dedicated service to their communities.

Maundy Thursday is a tradition rooted in Jesus washing the feet of his disciples the night before his death, and dates back to medieval times. The ceremony is a way for the monarch to thank individuals who have made a significant contribution through voluntary service.

The King and Queen listened to choral music and heard scripture readings before honouring the 152 recipients. After the service, Their Majesties viewed three rare Magna Cartas from Durham Cathedral’s collection and met with members of the cathedral chapter, representatives from Durham Diocese, university staff, musicians, choristers, civic leaders, supporters, and members of the Chapel Royal.

Reflecting on the occasion, the Dean of Durham Very, Rev Dr Philip Plyming said: "That was an amazing experience, to have 152 ordinary heroes who have served their community for decades come to the cathedral and be honoured by The King is unforgettable, for them, and all of us who were present."

One of the Royal Maundy recipients, Sister Josepha from Sunderland, had been recognised for her work with young people and families in the local community.

Among those recognised was Sister Josepha from Sunderland, celebrated for her work with young people and families in the local area. She described her emotions on the day: "It was exhilarating, tearful, emotional, exciting. The place itself is iconic, home to northern saints - I feel honoured to be stood in their presence and receive this gift from The King"

Following the service, The King and Queen exited the cathedral to the sound of State Trumpeters and greeted members of the public gathered on Palace Green.

The Dean of Durham concluded: "We have had a wonderful day which has had a fantastic team working on this who deserve a lot of praise and now bit of a rest too!"
