Leicester Cathedral to welcome Queen for Maundy Thursday service

Though steeped in tradition, the modern Royal Maundy ceremony has been held each year since 1952 and was most recently staged at St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle last year.

The Bishop of Leicester, Rt Rev Martyn Snow, said: "I am delighted that the Royal Maundy service is to be held in Leicester Cathedral this year.

"It will be especially moving to see Her Majesty, who has devoted her life in Christian service to the country, giving purses of special coins to the men and women in recognition of their Christian service to the church and community here in our diocese."

Royal Maundy was inspired by Jesus' command in John 13:34 to "love one another" after he washed the feet of his disciples on the day before Good Friday.

Canon Alison Adams, the sub-dean of Leicester Cathedral, said: "Her Majesty The Queen visited us at the start of her Diamond Jubilee celebrations and we are proud to welcome her back.

"This will be a great celebration of faithful service to the community from both the city and county of Leicester."

The Royal Mint's website says: "It seems to have been the custom as early as the thirteenth century for members of the royal family to take part in Maundy ceremonies, to distribute money and gifts, and to recall Christ's simple act of humility by washing the feet of the poor."

The Queen, who celebrated her 90th birthday last year will attended the Royal Maundy ceremony on 13th April.
