Labour MP raises women bishops 'no' vote in parliament

A Labour MP's warning the Church of England is at risk of being a "movement that becomes a monument" if it fails to ordain women bishops.

The Church's General Synod voted against plans to allow women to take on the senior position.

Diana Johnson raised the issue in the House of Commons today and tells Premier why she felt is was needed:

Conservative MP Edward Leigh said while he was "agnostic" over the issue of women bishops, he did not believe it was for Parliament to seek to intervene.

He said:

"We decided that in terms of doctrine and structure the CofE should be independent. That is modern, progressive and the right thing to do.

"I don't think it is right for MPs to decide how the CofE runs its own affairs. I do not think it is for us as politicians to make that choice."
