Justin Welby explains how he shares the gospel in 20 seconds

by Heather Preston

The Archbishop of Canterbury has been offering his advice on how to share the good news of Jesus with others in under a minute.

The Most Reverend Justin Welby has been touring the diocese of Guildford as part of an evangelistic trip to encourage believers to share the gospel.

Speaking to Premier, Archbishop Welby said evangelism has always been one of his main priorities and explained the importance of authenticity when it comes to the subject.

"It is a learning process. If the church is to bring people to faith in Christ -which is the last commandment - it must be because the church is made up of people who are truly disciples.

"Those who have allowed the Holy spirit to convert their lives, their attitudes, their foundations, their world view and know that they are gripped and held and motivated in the love of Christ.

"And then they will evangelise in the same way as they breathe, without even thinking about it."

The head of the Church of England advised people to rehearse saying it concisely with a Christian friend in a way that sounds 'natural and normal'.

"If I'm asked [about my faith] I say: 'a very long time ago, someone explained to me all about Jesus and how his death made it possible for me to know God was real and that has completely transformed my life. All the way since, despite my many stupidities and ups and downs.' - that took about 20 seconds."

The archbishop admitted that the prospect of talking to non-believers about Jesus can be daunting and advised people to start with prayer.

"It sounds intense and scary, so let's just make it real. What it looks like is prayer, praying for your friends.

"Five people who don't know Jesus, whom you love and care for, pray for them every day - they'll soon begin to ask questions.

"The Holy Spirit will do the heavy lifting, our role is simply to be willing to share what it means to be a Christian."
