The International House of Prayer (IHOP) Kansas City’s Church in Grandview conducted its final service on Pentecost Sunday amidst a scandal involving its founder.
According to The Kansas City Star the building was filled to capacity at the 10am service, with leaders saying their goodbyes and thanking those who have been part of the church.
Senior pastor Isaac Bennett led the service, expressing deep gratitude and farewells: "This morning our heart is really to just express gratitude to the Lord and gratitude towards those that have served and been a part of this community over the years,” Bennett said to his congregation. “There’s no easy way to do this" he continued.
The church has been embroiled in controversy since allegations against founder Mike Bickle came to light, involving sexual abuse and manipulation.
Bickle was absent from the final service.
“I recognise that this has been a very painful season...I’m so sorry for the pain and the difficulty that you’ve been through,” Bennett went on to remark in the service.
The decision to cease operations across IHOPKC ministries was described by Bennett as “excruciating,” yet necessary for moving forward. "It needs to happen so that we can move forward with a new start," he explained.
Amidst this upheaval, Mike Bickle issued a public statement admitting his "sinful" actions but not specifying any sexual misconduct. IHOPKC later announced a permanent separation from Bickle following confirmation of inappropriate behavior.
As IHOPKC navigates these events, including conflicting statements about its future and the closure of various ministries, with some leaders suggesting the 24hr prayer room will be kept open and others disputing this claim, leadership emphasises re-evaluation. "As a result of revelations and accusations against Mike, we are examining all elements of the ministry culture and foundations he influenced," IHOPKC stated.
