‘I know Jesus is my redeemer, He sustains us’: Testimonies emerge in Venezuela after earthquakes

by Kelly Valencia

Rescue teams continue to search through rubble in Venezuela after twin earthquakes hit last week, with survivors now beginning to share stories of survival, faith and loss.

So far, 33 people have been rescued alive, but officials warn the chances of finding further survivors are dropping fast.

The UN has said the death toll could eventually rise into the tens of thousands.

Emergency crews are working through collapsed buildings and unstable debris, while families wait for news of loved ones still missing.

Those pulled out describe extreme conditions underground. Some said they survived by staying still and keeping hydrated, while others cried out for help for hours before being found. Many also speak of praying as they waited.

Videos filmed by trapped survivors have circulated on social media.

One comes from Pastor Carlos Arizmendi, who said the Anunciadora de Sion evangelical church in La Guaira collapsed.

He said he escaped and rescued a young girl, but that members of his congregation were still trapped.

"We have lost everything, but I know that my Redeemer lives and sustains us", he said.

In another case, a 21-year-old man rescued after more than 106 hours under the rubble said he had prayed for “angels” to save him.

In a video message, he thanked the president of El Salvador for sending rescue teams, which he called “God’s angels”.

“God bless you President, thank you”, Aaron Levin said. “I am nobody, just an ordinary guy who spent five days under a building. But I am here thanks to God. He is the only one who got me out of there, and He sent His angels — the people who came to rescue me.”

The disaster has also hit the world of sport. Argentine footballer Lucas Trejo is mourning an “unimaginable tragedy” after his wife and two children were found dead following the earthquakes in La Guaira.

He has not spoken publicly, but has shared Christian reflections on social media, including a recent post on Exodus 16.

Across the country, evangelical leaders are urging prayer and solidarity as rescue work continues.

In Caracas, Roman Catholic Archbishop Raúl Biord Castello visited the badly damaged church of San José de Ñarauli, sharing a video from inside the rubble.

“Our hearts are with the deceased… and with those injured who are being rescued,” he said. “This was a very powerful natural phenomenon.”

He added: “We must build a network of solidarity… Human life is what matters most.”

Venezuela remains predominantly Christian, with most believers identifying as Roman Catholic, alongside a smaller Protestant community.
