Hillsong United’s Benjamin William Hastings launches solo career

by Kelly Valencia

Hillsong United’s award winner singer songwriter Benjamin William Hastings has decided to launch his solo career.

Following several years of working with Hillsong United in Australia, the 31-year-old has released a self-titled debut album.

Speaking to the Christian Beat, Hastings said the song writing journey for the album began a “few years ago”.

"It kind of talks to the struggles, struggling with fear, doubt, with fighting for God, fighting for finding God in the midst of everything, and it shows all the different sides of that.”

“So Help Me God” is one of his latest singles and one of the 25 songs which form the album.

"The chorus of that kind of came out when I think, in hindsight, I was really struggling with some mental health things and just didn't realize," Hastings continued. "So the chorus is like, 'I'm going to get through this, so help me God.'"

"That song, I kept trying to finish, [and] I just kept writing other songs out of it, and it just kind of kept having song babies. At the very end, it was the last thing we finished, and it's pretty much the last song on the record," Hastings added.

Hastings is not the first Hillsong United singer to launch his career. Earlier this year, Taya Smith-Gaukrodger also released her solo album “Taya”.
