The former headmaster of a Christian school in East London has been banned for life after admitting hitting children as young as five there.
Ofsted also found that 58-year-old Amos Johnson, who ran the private Mustard School in Dalston with his wife Faith, did not keep classrooms clean enough and that the playground was unsafe.
In a report investigators also ruled that students were not given adequate equipment to learn and the staff to pupil ratio was too low.
Faith Johnson, 48, has also been banned from teaching for life but can appeal after three years.
According to The Times newspaper Mustard School charged pupils up to £18,000 a year to attend before Hackney Council closed it last year.
The school had the vision of teaching children "in the way of the Lord".
