'He will protect us and give us courage': Worshippers in Spanish La Palma island hold procession after a month of volcanic eruptions

by Kelly Valencia

Christians in the Spanish island of La Palma have held a church service and a procession, praying for the Cumbre Vieja volcano to stop volcanic eruptions, a month on since it first started.

"Asking the Virgin to intercede before her son, and her son before the Father, that at this moment he will protect us and give us courage, and when he decides it, he will free us from this volcano that has us frightened and full of uncertainty. We go as children to God knowing that he will protect us and will not let us down," local priest Domingo Guerra told Reuters.

Worshippers were seen carrying a wooden sculpture of Our Lady of the Pine, the patron saint of the island, while praying for the eruption to stop.

"The Virgen del Pino (Our Lady of the Pine) for any El Paso resident is the greatest thing we have, she is not only the mayor but our holy mother, we have a lot of faith in her and we come to ask her that this ends as soon as possible, this is a great misfortune," another resident said.

The volcano in the municipality of El Paso first erupted on 19th September and has continued to spew ash and lava since.

Almost 7,000 people have been evacuated from the area but no deaths or serious injuries have been reported. At least 800 hectares of land have been engulfed by lava destroying about 2,000 buildings and many banana plantations.

"These are very difficult times… I ask the Lord for faith because I know that faith is what is going to help us to get out because if we are with the Lord and we hold on to him, he will not leave us at any moment, I trust in the Lord and we must all trust in him," La Palma resident Nieves added.

On Tuesday, Spanish volcano experts said they were unable to predict the end of the volcanic eruption.
